Oh I Wish I Were an Organized Person

Apparently January is all about organizing.
Great! Who doesn't like a little bit of organization in their lives....less clutter & more space sounds good to me. But where do you start when you feel like you may just be as far from organized as any one person can be?!? Well if you are me, you start small...really small.

Magazines.
I have a bunch of magazines. I know it is kind of old school to save magazines, when it is so easy to have a folder on you computer to store all of your found inspirations. BUT, I love that I can pull out a Martha Stewart magazine from 3 years ago and get a great idea for a Christmas craft that 3 years ago I completely overlooked.

My only problem was I had two shelves of very unorganized magazines, so if I wanted to find a few inspirations for a Valentine's Day project it took a while to find all the February issues. My very simple solution was to sort all my magazines by month, thus making it much easier to find exactly what I was looking for. I made twelve different stacks and got busy sorting.
I started on the left hand side of the shelf and placed the magazines January through December...with a little extra room for a few more magazines:)
When I finally recover from the craziness that was Christmas, and I decide to work on Valentine's Day crafts, all of my February magazine are all in one place waiting to inspire me!

What kind of organizing projects are you working on?

  1. Great idea! Love the final look as well.
My organization at this time is Kitchen and closets. With some of our older children moving back from being on their own for awhile (3 total) our closets are crowded! I need some organization with it.

  3. I have a TON of magazines that I should sort and stack. I keep mine because I use them for projects, as in I use the actual pages for projects and I'm addicted to fashion spreads. I'd love it if you'd post more organization tips because I need to get my crafting affairs IN ORDER.

  7. I toss all our magazines. My hubby used to like to keep them, but it drove me crazy.

Good organization idea though, since you actually DO use them.

  8. I did this with my Taste of Home magazines a couple of years ago and it made my life a WHOLE lot easier! The only other magazines I keep long-term now are November/December issues. I have probably 20 years worth of those issues of Good Housekeeping, BH&G, Redbook, Family Circle, LHJ, etc. I keep telling myself I'm going to go through them and pull out the things I want to keep in a binder, then trash the rest. Still hasn't happened. ;)

Right now I'm working on the dreaded 'spare room'. Egad!!!

  14. I organized my magazines like that too. However, this year I tore out the pages I had marked for the projects or inspiration inside. Then I filled the recycling bin twice. I put all my pages in a binder and organized according to topics. It was so freeing to let go of my magazines!! It felt and feels so good!!!!

  15. That's actually a great idea!!! I really need to go through my mags, b/c I haven't even read a bunch of them. :s I love to get them in the mail, but I need to take the time to thumb through. My problem is that I hate to trash my Martha Stewarts, Southern Livings, etc.

  24. Great idea. I always have trouble keeping magazines organized. I have many ripped out pages that I hope to have all organized one day.

I've been keeping different types of magazines and catalogs/idea books I keep in different areas. Maybe I should get them all in one place and sort by month like you did.

  25. Wow! You are exactly like me. I have cabinets full of magazines that I go back through all the time. My husband is constantly trying to get me to throw them away, so I've decided to go through them one by one and tear out the articles I want to save and organize into different notebooks by subject... yeaaaaa

  29. What an awesome idea! Currently my magazines are piled in my craft room closet, so when I'm looking for a project I want to try I end up getting frustrated because I can't find it. Thanks so much for sharing this great idea!
