Christmas Advent Calendar

I have been wanting a cute advent calendar for a few years. We had the cheap felt one from Walmart for a few years, but it wasn't nearly as cute as it could have been....so I decided to make my own. I did a little research online, and I got a ton of inspiration from other blogs and from Etsy! I took a few of the ideas that I found and mixed them all up and came up with my own advent calendar.

I hit up Hobby Lobby for
a canvas
wedding favor tins
scrapbook paper
and
a painted star

I already had some stuff at home
fabric
rick rack
mod podge
and
hot glue

I started by cutting out a lot of circle...48 to be exact. 24 without numbers for the inside of the tins.
24 with numbers for the outside of the tins.
I applied a thin layer of mod podge to the inside of the tin and to the inside of the lid. Then I place the unnumbered circles inside the tins and mod podged them in place.
I put the numbered circles in the lids {with the paper and number showing through the plastic} and then mod podged them into place. I cut out a Chrismas tree from leftover fabric and used spray adhesive to attach it to the canvas. I finished off the edges by hot glueing on some white rick rack.
After everything was dry, I put the lids on the tins and hot glued them to the fabric Christmas tree.
Starting on December 1st the boys will get to remove the lid to one tin a day and get a special treat that is inside. I also placed small pieces of paper with special Christmas activites {bake cookies, sing Christmas songs, wrap presents, watch a Christmas cartoon, read the Christmas story} for us to do in some of the tins.
I also made the boys some SUPER cute shirts to wear this Christmas! I used all left over fabrics for their shirts this year...so the only thing I bought was the actual shirt that was $3.50 at Walmart!

SUPER CUTE! :) Every year we watch and wait for one of our local stores to get the chocolate advent calendars that my kids love so much (because I always forget to order them until it is too late) and this would truly solve all of my problems! Well, as long as I had a reminder to either buy or make something to fill all the tins...... ;)
Seriously love this idea and I'm probably gonna have to try it! Thanks for sharing!

How incredibly cute!! I really want to make an advent calendar. I think I'm going to buy the stuff to make it while we're in the states next year (or start ordering stuff) and have everything ready to make one for next year. Thanks for the inspiration! Great job.

Wow...that is adorable, Kelli! Advent calendars are so fun. We have one that's nativity themed and have a great time doing it every year.
Do you have a monogramming machine? (Random question, I know!)

What a great advent calendar. I love that you made it in the shape of tree.
It must be the year to do advent calendars as I also did a muffin tin advent calendar.
Love the shirt, I will have to checkout the giveaway.
Thanks for sharing and have a fabulous day!

LOVE you advent calendar! Man they are everywhere in blogland this year. I'm feeling a little left out since I didn't get one made. I do have a fun countdown, a twist on it posted though.

What an adorable shirt! I love it!

Great job Kelli. I love the tree! I think it is funny that we have the same paper...I even have the red paper with Merry Christmas. I used that for the heading of my calendar. I can't wait to see who wins the giveaway!

SUPER cute, Kelli! I really love those favor tins (and actually have a stash of them ready to use for something). I think if we didn't already have an advent calendar made for us, I would be doing something similar. I just love the concept...and of course the look! Thank you for sharing the step by step instructions for others to be able to make one, too! The paper choices are adorable and I really like how you put it into the shape of a tree! Thanks for sharing and passing along the inspiration!

Oh, you are so amazing! I wish I had time to make one, maybe I'll get started on that for next year! I love it! The kids are making reindeer shirts tomorrow with their hands and feet prints. We've made them before but Alex has outgrown his. I love the boys' shirts too! SO cute!
