Featured Friend Friday #2

Hi! I'm Ashley from Read It & Eat and For A Rainy Day. I am so excited to be guest blogging for Kelli today. So, thank you Kelli!

I am a 23-year-old southern belle married to my high school sweetheart. I'm also a super blessed stay-at-home-mom to our handsome little man who is almost TWO! We share the same birthday...cool, huh? I was born in California, but have lived on the Gulf Coast my whole life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I started Read It & Eat as a New Year's Resolution in 2010. My resolution was to try new things even if I didn't think I would like them, and to try new recipes whenever I could. Sometimes they are amazing and yummy, and sometimes they are BIG flops! I do post about the big flops, because I am open to any suggestions on how to make that recipe work for me. I am enjoying learning new recipes, and loving new foods that I thought I would or used to not like. Don't get me wrong, I have tried "new" foods that I thought I would hate, and I still hate em. This remains my resolution in 2011 and beyond. My true love in the kitchen is baking, so I post a lot of baked goods on my blog.

Like these yummy cupcakes.
Snickerdoodle Cupcakes
I also post some of our family favorites, like Sweet & Sour Sloppy Joes (we like ours really sloppy). I have yet to eat Sloppy Joes made from can mix since.

And, I throw in some snacks every now and then. This Vanilla Popcorn is totally addicting.

About a year after I started Read It & Eat, I decided to start a crafty blog, too. I have posted some birthday projects. Here are the Spongebob invitations I did for my son's 1st birthday.

Some other things I've done are my vintage shower sign, a Valentine "Heart-gyle" wreath, and a thrifty box makeover.

Thank you SO much for reading about my blogs. Come over and visit sometime! Thanks again to Kelli for letting me post!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I hope you all have a great {GREEN} St. Patty's Day!
Here are a few pictures of Eli showing off some of our fun festivities:)

Find the St. Patty's Day tie tutorial over at Mandy's place Sugar Bee Crafts!
And you can find the tutorial to make these SUPER cute Shamrock Marsmallow Pops over at Poca Cosa. She used heart shaped marshmallows which I couldn't find in the middle of March, but I think they still turned out SUPER cute with the regular marshamallows!

Miscellany Monday

A. I had a TON of laundry to do on Friday...and Eli helped me out a little:) The boys were out of school on Monday and Tuesday last week for Mardi Gras and for some reason that totally through off my {sad excuses for a} cleaning routine. I like to try and finish up most of the laundry on Monday so I don't feel like I am folding clothes every day of the week. That didn't happen last week, so I had a ton of stuff piled up on Friday. Ugh! I hate laundry, but it was a little easier with my helper moving clothes from the dryer to the living room for me to fold!

B. I sort of got my craft room in a little better order this weekend. I'm hoping to finish cleaning it up so I can make Eli a St. Patty's Day tie kind of like this one that Mandy from Sugar Bee Crafts made! Isn't it the cutest thing ever!

C. I picked up a new door mat at Lowes yesterday while we were there shopping for some other stuff. It was kind of an impulse buy, but it was on sale so that makes it okay! I love that it is plain but still interesting because of the pattern....though I'm thinking about stencilling a big W on it just to make it a little more fun. Now I just have to figure out how to make a stencil big enough because I know my Cricut won't cut a letter as big as I want for this.
D. Today is Pi day. 3/14. That is kind of fun:) I have seen a few different pies {and some cookies} made to celebrate today. I'm thinking I may throw together an apple pie out of all the apples that are sitting in my fruit bowl getting old!

Hop over to Carrisa's and check out everyone else's miscellanies and see her cute new button:)

Featured Friend Friday

Hi I'm Kmama. Kelli asked me to come over here to her blog to teach you how to sew craft paint cook something. Hmm. Kelli? Why did you ask me over to your blog? You know I can't do ANY of those things. Hmm. Well, since I can't teach any of you anything, I suppose I could entertain you.

Photobucket

Like I said, I'm Kmama. I blog over at The Daily Dribbles. I'm wife to Jdaddy, my wonderful husband of 8 years and mom to Buddy, 6 and Buster 3, my two little spit-fire boys. I work full-time outside the house, and while I love my job, my days are pretty hectic.

If you're not familiar with The Daily Dribbles, let me give you a little information. The Daily Dribbles is my sanity. No really. It is. I'm typically a pretty sarcastic person, but oftentimes, in real life, sarcasm doesn't go over so well. I obviously can't be too sarcastic when dealing with people at work (did I mention I work in Human Resources?) and my kids don't get my sarcasm yet, so I unleash it all on the blog. The Daily Dribbles is basically, as my tag-line reads, "A pinch or sarcasm and a dash of laughs, from a woman who wears many hats."

I sometimes do reviews and giveaways on my blog, but mostly you'll find posts with humor, sarcasm, and about our daily life. I have a few posts that I'm especially proud of and I hope you'll take a look at. In I'm a Full-Time Working Mom I talk about how I choose to work outside the home and how you don't have to feel bad for me because I work.

As I previously mentioned, my days are really hectic. In Two Minutes I share the time I chose to pause life and enjoy a special moment with my youngest son.

And now I can't tell you that I write with sarcasm and humor and then only link you to some of my more serious posts, so for some laughs, check out these posts:

Kelli, thank you so much for featuring me!

Thanks so much for sharing your blog with us today Kmama! You really should head over and check out The Daily Dribbles. I love Kmama's wit, humor, and sarcasm {even if her boys don't get it just yet}!

Rainbow Waffles

Everything is more fun when it is in a rainbow of colors, especially food and especially food made for St. Patrick's Day! I wanted to try something a little different this year....I've already made rainbow cupcakes and rainbow pudding pops, so I though waffles would be a nice change of pace:)
I started with a box mix prepared according to the waffle directions, but you can use your favorite waffle recipe. I divided the batter and then colored it with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple Wilton gel food coloring.
**FYI don't evenly divide the batter...you need way more red and orange than you do blue and purple so divide and color your batter accordingly or you may end up eating a blue and purple waffle while your kiddos enjoy their rainbow ones!
Quickly and carefully add the colored batter to your warmed {ROUND} waffle iron. I found it was easiest to start in the center with a small circle of the purple and work my way to the outside with the colors making rings around the center. The batter will spread a little, just make sure to work quickly and get the circle sort of right! I think this would be easiest using squeeze bottles or maybe even putting the batter in ziploc bags, but I was in a hurry and spooning the batter onto the waffle iron worked just fine too!
Close the lid of your waffle iron and let them cook.
When you take your waffle out of the waffle iron it will look kind of like a tie dyed mess. The beauty of using a circle waffle iron to make these is that all you have to do to turn this mess into a rainbow is cut the waffle in half!
Add a few whipped cream clouds and get ready for the kiddos to squeal with excitement...at least that's what mine did anyway:)
I know what we will be having for breakfast on March 17th!

Lucky (Shoe) Charms

One of the worst parts about boys {in the fashion world anyway}, is the lack of accessories especially when it comes to holidays. Little girls can wear hairbows, necklaces, frilly socks, purses.....well you get the picture! And what do boys have?!? Maybe a hat or cute tie if you are lucky!
So when I started trying to come up with something for my boys to wear for St. Patrick's Day I knew I was going to have to think outside the box a little. My boys wear uniforms to school so a cute shirt is out of the question, and I'm pretty sure they would both refuse to wear a tie {even though I think a tie would be absolutely adorable}. So decided to bling up their shoes with some Lucky Shoe Charms!
I started with two colors of felt and a shamrock template.
Cut one color felt a little larger than your template and cut the other color felt a little smaller to make a layered shamrock.
Use a hole punch and make a hole through both layers of felt.
Sew the two pieces together either with a straight stitch or a decorative stitch. You could also simply use hot glue to hold them together, but I like the little bit of contrast from the white thread.
Tie the charm onto your little guy's shoe and they will be pinch free on St. Patty's Day!

Leprechaun Jello

I was flipping through an old copy of Kraft's Food & Family Magazine a few days ago and I came across this recipe for Jello Magic Mousse. It brought back vivid memory of eating this yummy dessert at my grandmother's house when I was little. I can remember wondering how in the world my grandmother made the yummy layer dessert! Well now I know how thanks to Kraft:)
When I came across this recipe I also thought it would be really fun to make with green Jello for St. Patrick's Day! So yesterday my boys and I made Leprechaun Jello!
{I have to be honest and tell you that I made this completely for my boys and didn't intend to even taste it...mainly because green jello makes me think of not so great hospital food. Well, I tasted it while I was getting ready to take the final picture, and it was so good! It tastes a lot like a creamy Key Lime pie, and nothing like the gross cubes of Jello that they serve at hospitals!}
You will need 3 cups of boiling water, 1 big box of Lime Jello, 1 16 oz. tub of Cool Whip
Mix the Lime Jello powder with the boiling water for 2 minutes or until completely dissolved.
Add the Cool Whip to the bowl.
Stir until all the Cool Whip melts into the warm Jello mixture.
Carefully pour the Jello into glass containers. This makes approximately 10 servings 1/2 cup each.
Refrigerate the mixture for about 8 hours until set. Top with a little Cool Whip and a gold coin.

I have been in a major crafting slump lately. I honestly have barely stepped foot in my craft {aka dining} room in at least two weeks, and there are still remnants of Valentine's projects all over the table. I haven't had a whole lot of St. Patty's Day craft inspiration, but I do have some fun food ideas so stay tuned for those next week:)

Henry brought this paper home from school one day this week. His teacher thought it was interesting...I think it is a little weird! Can you imagine naming your kid Gum!?!

Grant lost another tooth last week bringing his totally up to 4! Apparently he is a bit of a anomaly because most 5 year old have only lost one or two teeth at this point! I honestly think he was just trying to keep up with Henry {who has also lost 4 teeth as of now}!
Eli spent more than hour yesterday running around wearing Grant's old superhero cape saying "To the Rescue!" It was more than just a little cute:) First thing this morning he found the cape and insisted I tie it for him! I think maybe he needs one of his own, because Grant's has a big G on the back:)
I am going on a mission today to find a King Cake from Paul's Pastry Shop. They make the most wonderful King Cakes ever, but their store is close to two hours from us. I saw on their website that a few local stores are carrying their King Cakes this year, so Eli and I will be hitting up a few convenience stores today in hopes of finding our favorite cream cheese variety! If you've never had a King Cake you should check out their website....they ship anywhere in the U.S.!
