When I saw this post at 17 and Baking a few weeks ago, I knew that I really wanted to attempt this SUPER cute flag cake for the 4th of July.
**********
And here is what my cake looked like:
When the first two layers broke into a million pieces as I tried to turn them out of the pan, I kind of figured my flag cake wasn't going to happen this year. I finished baking the last layer, and tried my best to cut the cake the way the original recipe said. I even put the layers in the freezer to make them easier to cut.
Nothing was helping this sad, crumbly, red, white, and blue mess! In my frustration, I just dumped the cake into the lid of my cake keeper and moved on to making cupcakes with the remaining batter. Unfortunately, the cupcakes came out just as crumbly!
*******
Needless to say, I showed up to my family's 4th of July cook out with a store bought Angel Food cake, some strawberries, and Cool Whip:)

A- for effort! I saw that cake too, and though OH' i want to make it, but there is no way it will look that good. I think in her story she messed up or something and it still turned out that great. Happy day! Jenn
...and I'm sure it was just as good!
Oh man! I wonder what went wrong? What did you end up doing with it?
Oh no!! You get an "A" for effort though! And Angel Food cake, strawberries, and cool whip are my fav!
I love the title of this post!!!
Oh well, ya win some and ya lose some ;) Thanks for sharing!!
oh no! I hate when I have a 'fail' :)
but I bet the angel food cake was a big hit (you can't go wrong with that)!!
Lol, LOVE IT!!! Ok, sorry, not the fact that the cake failed because I'm sure you were super bummed. I'm SO GLAD that you shared it- we moms need to know that it happens to all of us! Especially in blogland where everyone posts about the amazing things they do...it's nice to come back to reality! lol
Awww! I wonder why it was so crumbly?
Angel food cake, stawberries and whip cream sound yummy to me!
see why I dont love baking? Sorry your cake didnt turn out :( but I <3 angel food!
You know what...I love angel food cake, strawberries and cool whip!! Too bad about the cake but I must confess when I saw that first picture I thought you had made it and I was a little jealous!! Great attempt though! What the crumble cake any good at least?!
It might not look like it was supposed to, but it still looks yummy to me. You can send your mess ups my way. They are better than my success' anyday.
thanks for sharing your oops with us. I too saw that cake pic and just decided I didn't even want to mess with it. So A+ to you for even attempting. You could have just crumbled it up more and made a trife:-)
Wow what a cake! Great job for attempting it! I'm sorry but I had to lol that you bought a cake to bring. I tried a new recipe to bring for our party too and I joked with my husband that I had to start early in case I messed it up and we had to stop at the store on the way lol
It takes a Super Mom to try to make a cake like that and it takes a Super Person to admit when it doesn't turn out. You are both.
I hope you won't be offended by this...but I am GLAD to see you actually aren't good at EVERYTHING!! heehee!!
I bet it still tasted good :)
Wow, now that is an awesome cake. I so don't know how anyone could pull it off though. Great try!!
I did make your taco pizza today for our Tuesday Therapy and it was fabulous, thanks for the recipe.
Have a great day!
Wonder what happened? I'm gonna try this sometime to see what happens, but I'm horrible at baking lol. I'll take strawberry shortcake though....sounds yummy!
psychedelic cakeballs. with chilled whipped cream frosting? ...if it hasn't been binned already... or trifle! with fresh berries and something good mixed into custard...
Hi, Kelli, thanks for stopping by to see my new porch. I'm laughing with you on the cake, I've seen another in blogland try that cake too. Apparently, it's a tough one to get right!
Hope you'll come back to visit again.
I've been reading your blog for a while, but haven't commented. I was cracking up at this because it is totally something that would happen to me. I am generally a mess when it comes to recipes like this, especially when I am under the pressure of having other people (besides my hubby) see it. I'm sure it tasted good!
Hee-Hee, that is quite a difference. If I did it mine would have NEVER turned out. Looks yummy anyways! :)
i did it! I actually attempted this and it came out semi okay...what i did was : used approximately 55343213 cans of pam spray on the cake pans, and then let them cool for 10 minutes, then took a knife around the edges of the cake, and kind of "shimmied" the pans up and down in the air to see if the cake would fall out when tipped over. Then i placed the layers in the freezer for a half hour to stiffen up so I could layer them easier... Very scientific, right?
Oh I love that! I couldn't help but giggle a little this morning. I would have been so frustrated - love angel food cake though - it's so yummy!
I made cupcakes and they were super crumbly too...I feel your pain!!
I am so sorry girl! That is a bummer. I too had a Fourth of July fail. I tried to make layerd jello in a huge clear bowl. Oh my messyness. It was HORRIBLE. The layers blended together and we are still eating marroon colored jello! HA!
visiting from NFF! what a bummer about your cake! what's the saying..."nothing ventured, nothing gained!?!" i really like your blog and your boy's are so cute!
Thank You!! I go to different blogs and sit in amazement, especially the Royal Icing blog sites. All of their cookies are so perfect. But when I use Royal Icing...BHAMMM...I have icing everywhere and a runny cookie. It is a delight to have someone post a couple failures. We all learn so much more from each others mistakes. Also, your other dishes look great! Especially the dipped cupcake!
